Rebecca & David
Rebecca and David once again found themselves in a perilous situation involving the supernatural. This all started five years ago when Rebecca found out she was the next in a long line of ancient mystical warriors, and he was, well, her husband of nine years. Just a perfectly mundane human husband.
The unequal power balance in their relationship is frequently reflected in how they treat strange phenomena they encounter; like this bizarre doorway to another dimension that has appeared in their suburban eat-in kitchen, and seems to have replaced the kitchen island.
David was understandably disturbed by this, since he had not had his coffee this morning, and the coffee maker was on that now missing island.
He wondered if some demonic creatures in a hell-dimension were now drinking his morning coffee.
The doorway was not the only new thing in their apartment. There was also this magical ball-shaped thing sitting on the coffee table. How did David know it was magic? It was a pretty safe bet. It was covered in symbols. After five years of this, David had learned how to read ancient magical books written in ancient magical languages. Just not the symbols that happened to be on that particular orb thing.
David knew exactly what to do. He sat down, and waited for Rebecca to come home from taking the kids to daycare, kindergarten and elementary school. He was no fool. He knew he was only mortal, and whatever is through that portal could slice him to bits in no time.
Damn, David wished he had some coffee.
He heard the keys in the front door.
"Hi honey. You didn't go to work yet? The daycare was closed for some reason, so I had to leave Patrick with your mother. What do you think about a lasagna for…"
She stopped, when she noticed the magical portal where the kitchen island and coffee maker should be. She was surprised of course, but soon her eyes lit up with glee.
They both walked up to it, and looked out. David had been there with the phenomena for the past three hours and had not bothered trying to peer through it.
"And there is a thing over there.." said David, as he pointed towards the seven sided sphere.
"Cool." She said, as she picked it up.
It seemed everything that she thought was cool worried him deeply.
As she held the object, a sound came from it, and it started to glow. He saw his wife's eyes turn solid gold, and her hair do that thing as if the wind is blowing it upwards when there is no wind.
He has seen that hair thing many times, but the golden eyes were new.
She went to the hall closet and grabbed her mystical broadsword, which she kept by the Swiffer.
She then went up to David, kissed him, and said "Where I am going you cannot follow. Tell our kids I love them."
Then, she let out her standard primal scream as she leaps to battle, with the sword in one hand, and the orb-thing in the other.
She lept through the portal, and it closed.
The kitchen island returned, but the coffee maker was still gone.
